Default End of season - river dead!

Managed to get a few hours in on my favourite river today and have tomorrow booked off from work for end of season.

The weather here in Munster isnt that bad, although heavy showers, but despite the presence of loads of sedges in the trees, and some olives flying around, i'd say i say 5 fish rise in about 5 hours.

Thankfully i managed to get some ( CDC and Elk has been a good find for me ) but just wondering if this is a common occurence out there.

This is my third season and i cant remember the river being quite so dead the last two seasons.

Are the trout preparing to spawn or something, or do they sod off somewhere ?

They are settling down in front of the telly to watch Munster get hammered by Leinster ....

They move upriver and into the tribs to spawn at this time of year.

Thankfully the last day of the season was far better. Plenty of (mainly very small) trout caught along with some nice ones. Didnt realise trout move to to tributaries to spawn....I cant even spawn in me own bedroom these days

Hi,
Wild trout move upriver in the same way that migratory fish do. The distances they move and when they start will vary from river to river. On the three freestone rivers I have a fair amount of experience of (Wear, Tees and Wye) the fish start to move upstream in August.

Thats why we catch so many small trout and very few decent fish at this time of the year.

Coarse fish do the same to a lesser extent, but at different times of the year obviously.

I think I have to change my username - the Gnome-Sage or something like that. So - where do Munster go to from here?

Hi Spider,

It's the same on my local river. The Tweed. The main water goes dead. The Trout have other things on their mind and head upriver or into the tributaries in preparation to spawn. If your season permits it, before the season ends head well upstream or look to one of the tributaries if your water has one. I have a tributary of the Tweed nearby and the last two weeks of the season I have had some very good trout in the 1lb plus class. These are fish that you would never see at any other time of the year from a water that generally produces Trout that weigh in, in low single figure ounces.

Default end of season

spider you will find most of of the rivers in munster start to slow down near end of season it a fact that most are getting ready to spawn in the streams . nymphs will get you the odd good trout and i mean the odd one there is a stream at the bottom of my garden 3 foot wide and at the minute it is full of trout a joy to behold going by past years this lasts 2 to 4 weeks it depends on how much water it gets and they disappear back down to main river and i would be lucky to see a sprat in it till this time next year hope this helps
