Default Jumping Trout

A question for you all.......

What does it mean when trout are jumping clear of the water?

I'm not talking about rises but a full 2ft or more clearance of the water. You know, the kind of thing you see on tv when a great white hammers a seal from below. I've seen this happen in deep water and small still waters so I discounted the possibility that they're fry bashing.

Cheers

Fazzer

I've usually interpreted this as an attempt to catch a food item, insect rather than fry?

Could be one of two things. Either they are trying to catch flying insects or, more likely, trying to get rid of a parasite on their skin.

Take care

To try and rid themselves of a parasite, as said above.

Why do fish jump out of the water?

Because they can!

That was the best answer I ever got.

Tee-hee!

Hammering emergers from the deep...poor oxygenation in the water or gorging on fry

Although the answer to get rid of parasites is the most popular, I have seen fish leap clear of the surface to avoid being eaten by a Big Female Pike
