Exclamation Hook pull angle

Hi, How much difference is there in pull angle on a down eyed hook compared to a straight eye.

I'm talking of the initial take here, once the fish is hooked it's hooked. Could there be a better hook, for a more acute angle which would provide a better hook hold.

If so, which ones are good and which ones do we avoid?

Best Regards

Stuart

Lots of folks have wasted lots of time on this one over the years .

Get a ballistic gelatine block , a spring balance , some different hooks and some nylon and a pencil and a lot of paper and do have fun and tell us how you went on !

Good luck

If this sort of question 'rings your bell' get yourself a copy of "Micropatterns" by Darrel Martin. Chapter 4, 'The Hooks' will keep you entertained for ages.

Hi lighthouse, a sensible answer at last. I'll look that one up. Thank you.

'Interesting' though the topic may be ... I wouldn't waste too much time on this ... there's just too many variables. Distance and angle at which the fish takes, the diameter of the tippet material, the guage of the hook wire, the length of the shank, the hook gape ..........

Far better to focus on what stimulates the fish to take your fly into its mouth and how to get it there.
