Default River Teviot

Just come back from 2 days fishing at Kelso.
My intentions were to take out a 2 day salmon ticket for the Roxburgh
beat which would cost about £60 each day.
As I haven't had experience at salmon fishing I decided to let my mate do
the fishing.
The Teviot looked great for a bit of trout fishing and being nearly at the
end of the season I decided to take out a trout ticket £10. I could
watch my mate salmon fish to see how its done.
The parking facilities were well marked on the supplied map but getting
from there to the river was a different matter.
We had to scale down banks and hack our way through the vegetation
so that we could drop down to a safe part of the river and then
progress down to a salmon pool.
Once there it was great-he fished the pool and I fished the fast water.
He didn't catch any salmon and ended up trout fishing with me, catching
a few trout and grayling.
We would definitely go back again but why don't they make access to
the river a bit easier.
We are not disabled-nor are we mountaineers or jungle craftsmen-we
are just two maybe overweight gentlemen and it was a nightmare.
Surely it doesn't take a lot of effort or expense, they charge enough
money for the right to fish for salmon-maybe they just want you to buy
the ticket and not be able to get to the water to catch them.
Its my first time down there so maybe we were just unlucky and chose
the wrong areas to fish.
I would be interested in the forums experiences.
The Junction pool is a different matter, its well manicured with easy
access. I have been told that to get a ticket to fish for salmon
there you have to be a millionaire or very famous.
We were able to fish it in the evening
(only for brown trout of course) after the salmon lads had gone.

Was there much water in the Teviot??,that area seemed to miss the heavy rain.

It was my first time down there but it looked a bit low-lot of fine weed on the stones-needed a good cleanout
I was told that the salmon were holding in the pools because they couldnt get upstream. It was ideal for trouting with some excellant runs.
Will definitely give it another go.
Have to go to the gym a few times first, before I attempt it again

Hi Jim been back about 10 days now but i had 5 days on the till, fished upper and the lower tindell beats, upper tindell was quite easy to fish fair ammount of water but alas no sea trout or salmon for me,lower tindell beat you have got to be a little more fitter, once you have parked the car its not a long walk but just lets say it is easier going down to the river than coming back up lol,now that is a lovely beat to fish with quite a fair ammount of fast water and some really inviting pools but again alas no sea trout or salmon for me.I know there was fish in it because the spinning and worming boys were having a field day some really nice fish.Next time i go i will be getting myself a wading staff.Still had a great time and learned alot about the river, caught loads of trout though.

I take it you were fishing where the Teviot runs into the Tweed at the Junction just before the Teviot bridge? It is a fair scramble to get down to the water right enough.

Next time you fish there, drive back over the bridge and up the A699 a half a mile or so and you will find parking with easy access to the river.

David.

David.
First day we parked at the viaduct on the Roxburgh side and tried to get downstream to the fast water and pool. It was hard going.
Next day we went to the other side of the viaduct and drove down as far as the private road. Parked there and hacked our way down to the river, that was not easy.
You would think that where there is marked designated parking there would be an obvious way down to the river but there wasn't.
I will definitely fish in that area again but will need to get in some training first.
Thanks David, for your advice, I will look at the spot you have recommended. - Peter

You could try some of the other beats on the river with easier access - the two Jedforest beats are good and the Monteviot beat upstream from Nisbet a real beaut.
