Hi guys,

Here's a wee pattern to try....
Hook - Partridge Czech Nymph #12
Thread - Brown Moser Power silk
Body - Cream nymphskin
Spine - 140 Brown Thread
Abdomen/thorax cover - Wapsi Thin Skin mottled bustard
Rib - Fine nylon mono
Legs - Golden Pheasant tail fibres

Place the hook in the vice and put a blob of superglue on top of the shank. Wind on some fine lead or tungsten wire over the glue. Leave plenty of room at the eye.


Catch on your thread and bind down the lead. Turn the hook in the vice and catch in the nylon rib and thinskin at the same time, thinskin uppermost with shiny side down.


Double up a length of brown thread and catch this in.


Catch in a 3" length of nymphskin by the corner. Stretch this backwards and catch in firmly. Use your thread to build up a thin tapered body.Give the thread wraps a thin coat of varnish to secure.


Taking your Golden Pheasant tail, pluck two fibres away from the stem. This should leave you with two little hook-like 'legs'. Catch these in on the underside of the shank around one third of the way along the hook. Repeat the process for the other forelegs. Tricky stuff!


As you can see, I made an **** of the leg spacing but the Grayling won't mind too much! Anyway, wind the nymphskin up towards the eye keeping the material taught. Carefully wind through the legs (a dubbing needle is handy here for moving the legs as you wind). Don't worry too much if the legs get trapped down, the process of winding the rib will enable you to reposition them.


Next, bring the brown thread up over the body, forming a 'spine'. This is followed by the thinskin.


Carefully wind the nylon rib.


Using Pantone pens, colour the fly as desired. Here you can see the effect of the dark brown spine.


Adjust the legs gently with tweezers then give the fly a coating of Sally Hansen HAN. The finished fly....

Can't see a problem with the legs myself. I'm sure you considered many different options....but it's a trade-off innit? Swings and roundabouts. You may sacrifice a bit of durability with the GPT as opposed to say,goose biots... but then you lose mobility....so on and so on. It's gonna bust yer melon when you lose one of these anyway so why make the tying even more drawn out or expensive Good choice on the legs I reckon.

golden pheasant is a good material to use for nymphs legs.

I know what you're saying Fishman but the fly is for fishing rather than display etc. In the time it can take to get the legs perfect you could sometimes have tied another! Just makes it even more frustrating when you lose one!

Anyway, just to keep you happy , I've re-done it with neater spacing and facing the same direction. Which alternative material would you suggest for legs?
