Default Bunny Leech - Step by Step

Thread: Standard Chartreuse
Tail: White Zonker Strip with a Fluoro Green/Yellow/Pink Bead
Body: Chartreuse Fritz
Eyes: Medium Silver Dumbbell Eyes
Hook: Kamasan B170 Size 8

The bead is optional, I tend to not bother, we've found that if you add a small piece of Fluoro Pink Fritz at the bend it acts as a hotspot and reduces the tail nipping. Although, for the purpose of this step by step I have shown the original pattern.

Step 1:
Push a pre-cut zonker strip through the eye of a fluoro bead using a dubbing needle.

Step 2:
Slide the bead half way along the zonker strip, you can glue this in place if you wish with a drop of superglue.

Step 3:
Attach the thread at the eye.

Step 4:
Using figure of eight turns, secure a set of silver dumbbell eyes onto the hook (not too close to the eye).

Step 5:
Wind the thread down the hook shank, and secure in the zonker strip as shown (leave a little tag).

Step 6:
Tie in a section of Chartreuse fritz, wind the thread half way along the hook shank, wrap the frtiz 3 times around the hook.

Step 7:
Pull the tag from the zonker back over the top of the fritz and secure with a couple of wraps of thread.
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 8:
Wind the thread back up to the eye, followed by the fritz, secure, whip/hitch finish and varnish.

Regards,
Terry

Default Very different!

This is a more common way of 'doing it' here in the States. The general pattern is one of the major 'go to's' for clear/low water steelhead fishing.

Different fly Fred, both Rabbit patterns but as you mention one great for Steelhead, the one I have shown is a little more localised, used to target Rainbows stocked into fisheries in the British Isles, the White/Green version is particularly effective when fished under an indicator. I've even heard of Sea Trout and Salmon falling to the fritz version shown.

The pattern you have linked to is more popular in the States and the Southern hemisphere, although we do use a beefed up version over here for Pike (known as "Pike Bunnies").

Terry

Thumbs up

Indeed it is Terry; that said, I'll bet your 'version' would be a killer very early/late in the day with a 'glow in the dark' type bead. Need to tie a few of these up and give them a go.
