Default Backwards CDC Suspender Buzzer

Not being the most adept fly tyer and also buying the wrong CDC, I wondered how I could use it and after a few minutes at the vise came up with the idea of doing it all backwards!

Materials:-

Hook - Captain Hamilton International size 14
Thread - Fine black
Body - Black Floss
Thorax - Peacock Herl
Rib - Fine Silver Wire
Suspender - CDC Natural Puff

Run your thread as normal and return to the eye area in open turns

Tie in the CDC puff with the fibres facing the hook - just 2 turns

Click the image to open in full size.

Gently pull the CDC through the thread and then tighten turns and add an extra one for security

Click the image to open in full size.

Loop the CDC over and catch in the point over the existing threads

Click the image to open in full size.

Tie in the wire rib first

Click the image to open in full size.

Followed by the floss

and then the peacock herl, wrapping the thread under the herl and down to the start of the thorax

Click the image to open in full size.

Form the thorax with the peacock herl and tie in

Click the image to open in full size.

Stand the rib wire up out of the way and run the thread to the end of the body followed by the floss to form the body, tapering to the hook bend, tie in the floss

Click the image to open in full size.

Wrap the rib evenly and secure before cutting or breaking off the excess then whip finish making an additional tapered end then coat body with SHHAN

One finished Backwards CDC Suspender Buzzer!

I like the idea behind this tying Roddy. Very nicely done, and it has given me food for thought.
Many thanks for it,

Sam

Albannach cuileag,

You may also want to check out, and experiment with, the Puffball series of flies, as developed by Pierre Mouchel.

Here is a sample. More can be found on the url below

Interesting flies, Hans.

How is the balloon effect with the CDC achieved?
It would be handy if that technique was done step by step for us less gifted.

Thanks.

Roddy,

Pierre posts to this forum, so he might pick up on your request.

That said, the technique does not involve anything other than to tie down the puff. Once the hold on the puff is released, the ballooning takes place automagically.

Cheers,
Hans W

I have been messing about with the puffballs for the least month or so.
For a Dry Sedge they only take about a minute to tie. For wing posts , simple to use. Have yet to try them on the trout

Can highly recommend purchasing from peche truite, good value for reasonable quality CDC. His stuff for drying flies works great on CDC.

Hi all,
I have been away for a few days, thanks to Hans, Mike and Otter to give the informations requested on the Puffball flies.
Opening day in France next Saturday, I was by a mountain lake last sunday and with the balm weather the trout were already taking a hatch of small stone flies, early season should be great!
