I would have been in a mess without this fly yesterday. It worked brilliantly when the Yellow Sallies were the main course on the menu...

Size 14 and 12 are the most useful sizes...

Hi Richard when would you use this fly over a griffiths? Look's very similar but a little more fiddly to tie?? I am guessing the footprint is porbably a little different and it possibly sits a little lower in the water?

Cheers in advance

Aha! To be truthful it is a fly you can use over all others and get away with it more often than not. I don't use Griffith's Gnat but would imagine it would be a better fly than the Double Badger in very small sizes. The Double Badger dressing seems to clog the hook from 16 downwards.

Under some circumstances the Double Badger can look like two or more flies very close together. I like to use a worn out one when the Caenis are about and I'm convinced it is taken as a raft of dead and dying Caenis spinners, as the rise form stays the same when the Double Badger is taken as it is when the little rafts are taken.

Hi Richard:

Do you see any advantage to silver badger over golden badger for this dressing, depending on the hatch?

One of the wonderful aspects of tying any fly with badger hackles is the great variety you can make simply by choosing a different colour of badger hackle. For example a Grey Duster with very dark (almost black) yellow badger hackle and yellow thread instead of brown on a size 18 hook makes a remarkably effective fake of the Iron Blue Dun

I think for this last few days where I have been fishing the yellow badger in my Double Badger was best for representing the Yellow Sally. Another time maybe the plain or silver badger would have an edge during a Caenis event...
