Welcome back!
Now we will shape up the body to resemble a giant sedge of some type!
If you want you can become Sweeney Todd with razor blades and scalpels, not advised! Get out your beard trimmer or if you don't have one, serrated edged small scissors and start trimming the body to shape little by little. Please DO NOT rush this step as you cannot rectify any mistakes at this stage
"Would Sir like anything for the weekend?"
Adjusting the position of the trimmer will give precise control of shaping the body
The top of the body is almost to the required shape
Do not forget to trim the underside for hooking capability!
Now tie in your finishing thread to the head area making sure it is secure
Here I am sizing the antennae for the finished look
Using a lighter, carefully blob the ends of the nylon for the antennae
Tie in your hackle stalk before the antennae
Tie in the antennae now, you can adjust their postion by looping the thread over them and gently pulling to required angle before securing in place with a couple of loops
Wind on your hackle and whip finish. Put a couple of coats of varnish or SHHAN on the thread
Check your hook clearance on the underside and trim carefully if needed
The finished result, a large sedge! There is no need to trim the trailing hairs, they help with the surface wake when you retrieve the fly. A short, jerky retrieve works well and takes are hard!
All you need now is a summer evening, slight breeze and some hungry trout!
