Default Killer Bug

So effective; so simple... it makes you wonder why we bother with the more complex patterns

If you own some Chadwicks 477, then use it! If not, search for a substitute that gives you confidence.

Hook: Your Choice (This is a Varivas 2120WB #14)
Thread: Copper wire
Yarn: 477 (or substitute)

(You can add more wire to achieve greater depth here)

Also worth trying with pink wire:

I know this has probably been covered before bu as the Chadwicks is like gold dust, but even more expensive, could someon suggest a couple of reasonable substitutes to try out? Have heard wonderous things about this fly.

When i was in Sportfish i notice they were selling Veniards killer bug yarn. Might be worth a look. Also I went through my Nan's needle box and came across mending yarn , which is all Chadwicks 477 is. The 477 colour can surely be matched with modern dye's if you have a different shade of mending yarn.

Regards
Ian

I think the veniard stuff is fine ,but any wool feather fiber,or dubbing that comes close should give a fair result .
One very good dubbing for bugs for the Ladies is camel , mine came from the windsor safari park

Quite right - as I said, use something you have confidence in.

Now, must get down to Longleat with the dubbing rake

I have just tried some sheeps wool i picked from a fence when i was in Wales and it seems to work well as dubbing. I may try dying some the pinky colour of the 477

Great tying Dave the pink wire looks good. Couple of questions,

How fine a wire do you use?

This fly firmly has its roots in the southern chalkstreams and gin clear sight fishing. Do you think it would perform on the northern spate rivers where sight fishing is out the question?

I have done rather well with the Killer Bug on rivers such as the wharfe and Tees
