Body: Rabbit fur
Wing: Snowshoe Hare's foot.

First prepare materials by raking the rabbit fur and popping in the coffee blender for a few seconds. Then cut a lump off the heel of the snow bunny foot down to the skin, then add a lump from between his toes, pop this in the blender. You can mix these by hand it just takes longer, a lot longer.


Take a pinch of the snow bunny, tease it out and lash it to the shank in the wing position.


Gather the wing as if you are doing a parachute post and put a couple of turns around the base.


Trim to size.


Take the thread down the bend and split it ready for the dubbing. The vice is turned 90° to stop the thread catching on the hook point.


Add dubbing.


Spin bobbin to make a nice spiky rope (I do like a spiky dubbing )


Wrap up shank and around wing to just before the eye. Whip finish and a drop of varnish to complete. You can pull some of the excess spiky bits out if you wish.


#16 #20 #24 ready for the troots.

Interesting fly Tango. I bought Snowshoe Hare's foot a while back and tied a few flies with it. To tie the wing I Just cut a lump off the foot and tried to tie it in. Your way looks far better and I will need to get the coffee grinder out at the weekend.
Is the way you demonstrated the standard way to prepare Snowshoe Hare's foot?

Don't know about the 'standard' way, it's the only way I can get the stuff on the hook without it slipping underneath. Tried a couple using it like calf tail, didn't like them. I prefer using it this way.

I like it; my kind of fly.

I tied up a half dozen of these a few weeks ago, only difference being that I used a blend of olive and dun and cream snow bunny for the body.
They now reside in the "maybe used" box.

Have u had much sucess with these.?

Not tried them yet, I was rooting through my hair and fur box this morning and came across some died rabbit patches that I hadn't used, so threw that on instead of the normal Hare's ear. They float OK with the splash down test in the sink.

When you say trim the post to size is there any formula for the height of the post to hook size.

Formula? Far too technical for me, I just throw it on the hook and hit it with the scissors. Trim it to size means trim it to any size you like.

Depends on how you want it to float/how heavy the hook is/how fast the water is, I've seen it trimmed almost to the shank and also tufty. I've used about a hook gape on the #16 and #20, more on the #24 because the gape is smaller than a gnat's whatsit.

Nice Tango. That one is tied in a similar style to the little dry fly I sent you.
Have you tried Gudebrod 10/0 thread?

Not tried the Gud 10/0, I had a go with the Bennecchi 12/0 liked it, stuck with it. It splits easily doesn't knot much and is strong enough for my hamfisted efforts.

The #20 2488 was easy, the Mustad #24 was pushing it a bit.
