Default OE Dun

I must thank Scotfly for introducing me to this fly, it had more than a few good grayling last year.

Hook: Nymph hook, this is a #16 FM 31515 1.5x long.
Thread: Thin, this is Benecchi 12/0
Wings/body/legs: CDC.
Tail: C de Leon or microfibbets.

Insert hook in vice, tie in tail and trim off butts about the 2/3 point.

Get four cdc feathers about the same size.
Click the image to open in full size.

Snip out the tips, the V will be the wings. Line up the cut ends of the stalks and have the curve going the same way.
Click the image to open in full size.

Tie in on top of the hook and pull back until the thread bumps off the stalk, don't let it slip around the shank.
Click the image to open in full size.

Build a thread bump in front of the wings to raise them.
Click the image to open in full size.

Split the wings into two roughly equal parts.
Click the image to open in full size.

Bring the first feather over and between the wings, stroke the wings up and back as you do this so no wing fibres are trapped. Do the same with the second feather.
Click the image to open in full size.

Bring the third and fourth feathers around the sides.
Click the image to open in full size.

Run the thread back to the tail.
Click the image to open in full size.

Bring the two side feathers around the sides again to the rear.
Click the image to open in full size.

Bring the second feather over the top again to the rear, stroking the wings as you do it.
Click the image to open in full size.

Tie off the three feathers and wind the thread as the rib, when you get to the thorax take one wrap between the wings to park the thread at the head. Trim butts off carefully.

On the first feather that is still over the eye brush the cdc fibres towards the stalk butt, this will remove them from the stalk and make the legs.
Click the image to open in full size.

Snip the stalk.
Click the image to open in full size.

Tie back the legs and make a neat head, trim the wings to shape.
Click the image to open in full size.

Finished fly front on.
Click the image to open in full size.

Easy fly to tie and catches well, what more could you want?

Excellent as always Hans.

This is the only fly of Ollie's that I can tie without getting my fingers in a twist.

Well done Tango, that is excellent.

For those of you who have the CDC tying bug I can can highly recommend purchasing from the following site http://www.pechetruite.com/
Good quality , reasonable pricing and excellent delivery.
The CDC puffs are brillant for sedges - i look forward to testing them on the trout.

I've spent the last few months playing with CDC, experimenting etc... After about 4 different methods I had finally settled on tying methods for spent spinners and duns. The method I had settled on were the same as tangos step by step except that I used a separate CDC hackle wound up the body and I used CDC dubbing to split the wings, and the legs were the straggly bits of the dubbing.
Then along comes tango and kicks about 40 flys outa my fly box into the "to be salvaged hook box"

Tied up a few last night.

What I really like about this pattern is the bringing of 2 of the hackles around the sides of the wing. The end result is a very flexible fly. Because these two hackles are controlling the position of the wings it is simple to pull the wings down into the spent position and then backup to dun position. This is a big plus when fishing the evening rise.

Nowt to do with me, blame Oliver Edwards.

I'd been doing the same, fiddling with cdc olives looking for an easy pattern that doesn't take an age to tie. Scotfly gave me one of those to try on the Avon last year and it caught a few in the middle of a Mayfly hatch. Got home and tried them on the Dee, there's been a few in my dry box ever since.

The only problem is that this had the potential of bringing my fiddling with CDC to an abrupt end. Luckily your step by step has come a few days after I read an article in an old copy of Fly Fishing and Fly tying on CDC spiders.

So Otters core flys for the season will be
1. OE Dun
2. Spinners based on OE dun method.
3. Bubble CDC sedges
4. CDC Puffball Sedges ( will replace no 3 if they work )
5. CDC spiders - ( apart from a few trials , yet to be tied and tried)
6. CDC & Elk
7. Klinks

I purchased some of pechtruites stuff for drying CDC flies - it works a treat ( at least with flys wet from sink water), another problem solved.

If it works out then the bulk of my flys will be simple to tie and more importantly enjoyable to tie.

that should be the fly box sorted, so could someone please do a step by step for my missus so that I can get time to go fishing.

Excellent fly Tango. That's another I have to tie up in various sizes for 1st of March. Time is running out!!

Does OE tie the pattern on any of his DVD's?

Cheers,
Brennan
