Default Dog biscuit or Bread fly

Hello All,

Im new to fly tying.

Going to try and do a little fly fishing for carp this summer and would like to know if anyone knows how to tie either the dog buscuit or bread fly?

Or any other fly that would be suitable for carp fishing on the fly?

Thanks

I can help with the dog biscuit fly.

You will preferably need a wide gape hoow about size 10 and a lot of natural deer or elk hair.

Simply tie on the thread to the curve, and spin a lump of deer hair (i put a bulk of thread just behind the first lump to kick it out a bit more otherwise i have found my dog biscuits have tails lol).

Wrap through the butts of the hair towards the eye and spin another lump of deer hair (you should be about halfway) then i add a hi-vis post of antron or something similar so your fly is easily seen from any free offerings which happen to drift in to your swim . Once the post is attached i spin two more lumps of deer hair and tie as small a head as i can get away with.

All that comes now i the messy bit of trimming.

If you are not exactly a purist (unlike me ofcourse always fish my dog biscuits upstream) carp tackle shops sell floating rubber dog biscuit imitations which make rather nice flies.

Dan

Default Carp

You could try buying a big bag of floating pellets and superglue if you fancy the purist route

Having had a good few carp on fly tackle when i was still carp fishing I found The following worked.

Best by far was a chum mixer tighly hair rigged to the fly , Re casting was an issue though. Although a bag of pre drilled mixers and an elastic band hair rig solved lots of problems for quick rebaiting,.
Second best was Chum mixer superglued to a hook.
Third was the spun deer hair lookalike and the artificial mixers
I also used to carve lookalikes from cork and glue hooks to them but you have to play about with them so they sit in the water at the right level....

I also used The partridge artificial bread. Dont waste your money on it its horrible stuff.

carp on the fly rod is fantastic. during the summer when the trout fishing is hard, i usually go to my local course fishery. armed with a bag of dog biscuits i have a bit of success.

and you always seem to get a few looks for the course anglers.

i use size 10 dog biscuit imitatations tied using deer hair and then cut to a dog biscuit shape.

kind regards
rivercoln

Thanks for your replies.

I have bought some deer hair and im going to attempt to tie my first dog biscuit fly.

Yes, carp fishing in the summer seems like great sport, i will try on my local still water and i may also have a cast or two on the river too.

Good luck with the fly tying and the fishing mate, carp go like stink on a fly rod.

Took me an absolute age to get the hang of spinning deer hair and I am still not particularly good at it but atleast now the carp dont seem to mind so much.

i took a fly rod to two course fisheries in my time. the first owner took one look at the fly rod and told me to get on my bike. presumably so i didnt wake up the regulars, who all seemed to have shelters and beds pitched (says a lot about coarse fishing .

the second owner allowed me to fish, allthough he did look a little bemused. not long after i started, he stood by me, and hardly left my side until i packed up. he was amazed that i was doing better than the coarse fishers with their swimfeeders, catapults and dozens of multi coloured pellets and maggots.

i used the bread fly and also a sweetcorn fly i made up with yellow foam shaped and varnished.

The guys with the shelters and beds were probably bemused at you being so pleased to catch "nuisance fish" - a lot of them don't know whether to be happy to have caught something until after they've weighed it.
