I first used the Magus in 1989 on the Endrick, where it caught a few salmon and sea trout. Since then, it has taken salmon on the Earn, Ruchill, Teith, Dee, Allan and Alness, and probably a few others. The original dressing, shown below, has been modified over the years, the most obvious change being the substitution of fluorescent floss for the jungle cock, but I think the fly retains the mobility and translucence I look for in a salmon fly, with a touch of colour and a bit of flash for good measure.

And if any of you think John has put extra effort into his demonstration flies above, I can assure you that is exactly the standard I got when I ordered a mixed box, a couple of years ago from the very same Gentleman.

Why didn't I order any last year, I hear you say ?
Honestly and without intending to sound cheesy, when I saw the quality of fly, John ties, it made me want to be a better fly tyer.

Up to that point, I was bored with tying salmon flies - churning out the same old shrimp style bulky offerings.
From the moment I saw them, I thought 'now that's how a salmon fly should be tied'.
I've been mimicking this 'John Gray' style in my own tyings ever since.

Haven't quite reached the benchmark yet, but it certainly has given my tying a new lease of life and a standard I'd like someday to achieve.

Agreed Gnat, Mr Gray does tie an exceptional fly. Highlighted for me by the smoothness of his underbody and subsequent tinsel body and the rib, not forgetting the proportions of the fly.
