This is the easy/quick way, the original (proper) way to tie it is to wrap the orange and yellow bucktail around the shank/tube and then tie in the black on the sides.

Hook: You choose.... tube/double/treble.
Tag: Silver oval tinsel
Rib: Flat silver tinsel
Body: Black floss
Wing: Orange, yellow and black bucktail mixed.... you can alter the mix to get the colour you want, I have done a lighter one here. If you want darker add more black etc.

This one is tied on a #12 Low Water Double.


Mount hook and start thread where you want the body to end.


Wrap thread down to barb and tie tag.


Tie in rib and floss, take thread back to start point.


Wrap floss and rib.


Cut bucktail and lay out on bench, mix well.


Gather bucktail and make sure it has mixed enough.


Tie onto hook with 3 loose turns.


Use fingers to move the bucktail around the hook.


Make sure the bucktail gets underneath the hook.


Put a couple of tight turns on and then cut butts off, add a drop of varnish to the cut ends.


Make head and varnish.

Nice Tango. Just about the perfect size for my river back home.

I've never tied a tube so I thought I'd give it a go, out came the cotton buds and the bucktail.

that's just about spot on tango. Took me ages to get them right on tubes. I'm doing some with coneheads tonight for a wee change. They''re looking good so far but we'll see what the fish say.

Finn Gold perfection

Spring is the best time for this fly, or september a version erring on the orange side can work well in a size 10/12.

Had a lovely 9lber late January on the drowes , a few pools down from the lodge, about 6 years ago on a 2" waddington Willie Gunne. The fish was covered in sea lice. The fight was so poor we believed it to be a Kelt and were going to try to release it without taking it from the water, once we spotted the sea lice the net came to hand very quickly. I reckon the fish had run straight from the sea without pausing until he met the bold Willie Gunne.
I savoured a nice large Scotch in the pub that night and toasted the man himself.

The standard version of the Willie Gunn has a gold tag and rib, but I dont believe that it will make much difference to the fish. A more successful variation for me is the Gold Willie Gunn, where the black floss body is replaced with gold tinsel, usually Jungle C0ck eyes are added to this variation and it is finished with a red head.
