Following on from my thread "advice for beginners" in the general section,I thought we should have one on here for flytying beginners.... As many tips as you like.

My advice is...

Use half of what you think you will need.

Same advice, but in addition to the quantity of each material, just use half of the materials! Frank Sawyer made great fish catching patterns using just copper wire and eithr one feather or wool. No thread even!

For all levels: A good fly starts and ends with sound proportions.

For beginners: Focus on mastering techniques. The variety of flies you will be able to tie follows from this.

Take the twist out of the thread before tying in materials or whip finishing.

Only buy the materials you need for the flies you want to tie.

A kit is best to avoid.

Make sure your tying area is well lit and uncluttered.

A forum post should be like a skirt. Long enough to cover the subject matter, but short enough to remain interesting.

Use the minimum number of turns of thread, two well placed tight turns will secure almost anything. Generally side by side touching turns of thread are what you want, not criss crossed in such a way that it resembles the lashings on an improvised life raft!

Learn to tie one fly well before moving onto another.

Leave plenty of room to tie the head.
