This is the Qualifier. Dressed on the appropriate hook it is a Wet Fly, Lure or Sea Trout fly (sorry Brennan)
The version I have tied is the wet fly, a good flashy attractor pattern. This is a god pattern to play around with. Try it with a red tail and cheeks or Green tail and cheeks, or use Lite-Brite for the body or just do what takes your fancy.

HOOK – Kamasan B175 #10
THREAD – Black 6/0
TAIL – 8 Strands GLO-Brite Orange Floss (No 7) under 8 Strands of pearl Chrystal Hair
RIB – Fine Oval Silver or Silver Wire
BODY – Flat Silver
BEARD HACKLE – Brown Partridge
WING – Grey Squirrel Tail
CHEEKS – Jungle Cock

STEP 1
Attach the thread and wrap to the bend, catch in the tail on top of the shank and the rib under the shank as you go.



Then trim the tail to length.




STEP 2
Cut a point on the flat tinsel and tie in.



Then wrap to the shoulder, follow with the rib.



STEP 3
Invert the hook in the vice. Then prepare the fibres for the beard (also known as a false hackle)


First stroke the fibre to right angles to the stem.



Then grip and simply pull off the stem.



If you want a denser hackle, turn the Partridge hackle round and pull the fibres from the other side.



Then tie them in as shown.



STEP 4
After cutting the waste and binding down turn the hook back to its normal position in the vice. Then prepare the squirrel by aligning the tips in a stacker. Then offer up to the hook to check for length.



Then transfer the grip to your other hand and tie the squirrel in.



After trimming the butts from the squirrel tail add a generous amount of varnish to the exposed roots, then take one open turn of thread to the eye of the hook. When you are tying in hairs like squirrel if you try to wrap from the roots to the eye the thread will slip off.



Then bind the roots down.




STEP 5
Prepare the jungle cocks cheeks for tying in by stripping the fibres either side of the eye.




Then tie in. If you want more security, tie the stem down to the eye then fold them back over-wrap with thread.



STEP 6
Form a neat head, whipfinish and varnish for the completed fly.
