Default Olive CDC Emerger

Hoping that I have this right, a step by step of an Olive emerger as tied by Stuart Crofts, as Stuart said, this fly should last a few fish before needing replacement, I like that in a fly

Hook is a Hayabusa Klinkhammer, size 16, with a bend about 5mm back from the eye, you need to make this bend, use pliers and be gentle, attach tying thread, Olive if you have it

Tie in your body\tail material, I have used Olive Neve Fibre (Roman Moser)

Bind it down on top of the hook shank, then tie in some mirage tinsel

Dab the shank with varnish, and wind the mirage up in touching turns

Lightly, think waterhen bloa, dub the thread with a minimal amount of Olive Superfine dubbing, take this down to the end of the mirage and back up in open turns, allow the mirage to shine through

Pull the Dust fibre up and over the dubbed body, leaving a couple of strands to imitate a trailing shuck, tie down and remove the waste ends

Catch in a par of Olive CDC feather by the tips, try to get 2 similar feathers for this

Click the image to open in full size.

Dub the thorax, I have used Pine Squirrel.

Click the image to open in full size.

Pull the CDC feather over the dubbed thorax and tie off, remove waste CDC, add a drop of varnish, job done

Click the image to open in full size.

The mirage tinsel should show through the dubbed body, gives that gaseous impression just before emergence of the fly

I really like that Chris, and that body is really suggestive! I imagine that'll be a great fly for some gentle water or where trout might be a little spooky.

Great tying

Very nice Chris, just the type of pattern I like. I'll have to give it a try out.

I'll be doing the same Chris, thanks for putting this up.

Nice tying Chris.
Does it work? The reason i ask is i am very suspicious of dry flies/emergers with too much sparkle. Its not something i would think to use but am always happy to learn.
I am also trying to understand the design, why is the wing (cdc) such a contrast to the rest of the body in terms of colour and shade?

Materials list for this pattern

14 or 16 klinkhamer hook
12/0 Olive threaad
Roman Moser neve fibre for the body cover and shuck
Olive superfine dubbing
Mirage tinsel
CDC feathers
Pine squirrel

Buzz,

The loop wing, I suppose you could make this any colour, the only person seeing the colour of it would be the chap fishing it, I also tie this with an Olive grizzle hackle and trim underneath, I use that one in rougher water, the fish will get an outline of the wing, the rest of the fly ticks all of the boxes, well, that is what Stuart told me, I believe him, when wet there is a touch of sparkle, nothing more, so have a play with the amount of dubbing

I am going to tie some dirty yellow ones up for the yellow duns,

Glad you all like it

Chris
