Default SBS: Grannom/Caddis Emerger

I've been asked for an SBS to a grannom emerger I've been playing around with lately, and thought you guys might like to see it too.

Any thoughts/improvements greatly appreciated

Hook: Partidge 15BNX Klinkhamer - Extreme, #16
Thread: Roman Moser Power Silk, grey
Abdomen: SLF Masterclass, Light Damsel Nymph (#29)
Rib: Nylon thread, brown
Thorax: Squirrel
Underwing: x4 CDC feathers, natural
Overwing: Deer hair, coastal

1. Mount your hook in the vice, crush the barb and tie-in your thread.

2. Form a neat body taper, after which, tie in your rib material and wind your thread down to the base.
Click the image to open in full size.

3. Neatly dub your body, removing any kinks/buildups as you go and keeping to the tapered profile.

4. Wind up the rib in neatly spaced turns.

5. For the thorax, split your thread to form a dubbing loop by spinning your bobbin holder anti-clockwise and, once your thread has been sufficiently un-twisted, insert a needle to open the loop and insert a small amount of squirrel dubbing.

6. Spin your bobbin holder clockwise to spin the dubbing and to form a nice spikey dubbing rope.

7. Wind on the dubbing rope.

8. For the underwing, we need to select four equally sized CDC feathers. Neatly lineup the tips of the feathers and pinch together ready for tying the underwing.

9. Tie in the CDC over the spiky squirrel thorax. The underwing should be just a little longer than the body.
Click the image to open in full size.

10. For the over-wing, we'll be using coastal deer hair. Select an acceptable amount of hair and cut.
Click the image to open in full size.

11. After removing as much of the under-fur from the deer hair as possible, place your deer hair into a hair stacker to align the tips.
Click the image to open in full size.

12. After a few firm taps your deer hair should be nicely aligned by it's tips and, at this stage, can then be removed from the stacker.
Click the image to open in full size.

13. Tie down the deer hair with two firm wraps OVER the hair, and one firm wrap THROUGH the hairs at a roughly 45° angle.
Click the image to open in full size.

14. Whip-finish behind the eye (beneath the deer hair) and snip the hair to form a nicely angled head. The end. Job done. Go fishing.

Very very nice Gareth.
And no really fancy materials to boot.
Hate it when you fancy tying a fly and it needs hair from a bats balls and a hackle from the outer coverts of a dodo.

Actually laughed out loud to that I know what you mean though, and I agree it's a pain when the materials get overly-specific.

Thanks for the thumbs up on the fly too guys! Glad you like it

Do you have much joy when the Grannom are about on the Usk Gareth?
When I used to fish the Mardy beat I used to virtually go home when I saw them about. Clouds containing millions of the bloddy things above the river and not a single fish moving to them. It used to drive me mad. Invariably I used to move away from the areas covered in the Grannom and fish elsewhere with streamers.... Maybe I was missing a trick though.....

Hi Fliman, I actually tied this pattern for small streams work, and especially in the fast, more turbulent runs.

I'll be sticking to my standard parachutes or CDC & Elks on the Usk waters.

Hi Gareth,

That fly looked so good i already copied it off your website before you put it up here!

Cracking looking fly! I did give it a whirl last night but even though there were waves like Portcawl beach on the river it still held up a copper john to!

Cheers!

Brilliant pattern Gareth, think i'll knock some up for use as a general searching pattern. Thanks for sharing.
