Parachute Adams

Hook: Any standard dry fly size 12 – 20
Thread: Grey or Black
Tail: 3 to 4 grizzle and brown hackle
Body: Grey muskrat under fur
Wing Post: Polypropylene yarn
Hackle: Grizzle and Brown cock hackles



Tie in the wing post as shown. I like to use Niche’s Siliconised polypropylene yarn as it doesn’t ‘fray’ with time. It stays nice and straight the lifetime of the fly.



Tie in the two hackles. Tie them up the post.



Take the thread down to the hook bend and tie in the tail.



Dub a little muskrat under fur onto the thread and dub the entire length of the hook right up to the hook eye.



Make three turns and then tie in the grizzle hackle.



Make another three turns with the brown hackle and tie down.



Trim the excess hackle and whip finish. You’re done.



A few more for the box.



A variant of the Adams on a size 17 hook. The tail and hackle are golden grizzly while the body is Adams grey Fly-rite dubbing. Easier to tie in the smaller sizes due to one hackle.

these are my most sucessful fly at the minute... but now i've run out due to the smash and grab technique of my local trout... hooks straightened... hackles ruined!!!! aarrgghh!!!! gonna have to attempt to tie some (not long started tying) great SBS...

Nice SBS, thanks. One question, do you wind the brown hackle through or underneath the grizzle?

I have a very, very minor suggestion. That is to tie the tail in first and wind over the tailing material all the way up to the tie in point of the post. This will give you a tapered underbody all the way to the post.

On your fly, you have cut the tailing material short and this leaves a thinner section of underbody. You can see that when you dubbed the body forward, the very slight thinner body section behind the post. Had you taken the tailing to the posting in point, the body would have an even taper.

The fish don't care but it makes for a better looking fly with no more work.

I tie the hackle off on the post. It makes for a fly that sits a little lower on the water which is what I prefer. You can tie the hackle fibers convex side down as you have done for a lower body position or convex side up for a higher body position.

You can click on the link below to see how a tie off on the post is done. It makes for a neater looking head but the main thing is how low or high you want the fly to sit on or in the film.

great looking fly bet it floats well any way to my question could some kind gent point me in the right way as to were i could get some of this Niche’s Siliconised polypropylene yarn cheers

Dont know about the niches stuff but Aerowing is brilliant for wing posts and floats like a cork, also comes in nice bright colours which make the fly a lot easier to pick out on the river.
