Following my previous step by step where I created the wing using spun CDC loop, and also my other Step by step on CDC spinners I have been experimenting with winding the CDC as a hackle. As usual the photograpy and the tying aint up to Sotfly standards but I hope these may be of use to some tiers.

Hook: any dry fly
Thread & dubbing : your choice, I use fly rite or simply wind on a CDC feather to form the body.
Tail: your choice

Step 1

Do the usual to tie in tails and dub up to about 1/3 from eye.



Step 2

Take 2 equal sized CDC Feathers - preferably onces with narrow stems- u may wish to mix colours. Pull of fluff from the base of the feather. Lay the two feathers on top of each other and the lay on top of hook with good side down. Secure with 4-5 tight wraps of thread and cut of whats left of the bottom of the stems.



Step 3:

Wind on top hackle , then bottom hackle , cut off waste.



you should end up with something like this.



Step 4: For a Dun : Stroke all the fibres in an upward direction, bring the thread around the base of the wing to hold it upright, bring the thread back to the barb side of the wing. Dub thread and wind over base of wing and forward to eye to form thorax.



For a Spinner Stroke all the fibres in an upward direction, bring the thread around the base of the wing to hold it upright, bring the thread back to the barb side of the wing. Split the wing into two equal halves with a dubbing needle. Dub thread and wind over the split Wing in a figure of eight until the wings are well separated and lying horizontal.
Trim the wings to desired size.

This picture is prior to dubbing , I did a thread figure of 8 just to show how the result can be achieved.




And heres some of my sad Salmon flys , some dabblers and mayflies for loughs , most of them haven't seen water for at least 4 years.
I decided to allow them a little trip on the net.

Nice one Otter. My initial reaction was... No, no, no you should tie the hackle in by the tip, then I saw the reason for tying it in by the butt
Don't think I've seen the wing formed that way... add innovation to your list of talents, well done.

Wow, I got in a reply before wormonly2000007 hijacked the thread

Scotfly, glad u saw a reason for tying by the butts - im fffed if I can, other than the fact that I'm so clumsy I would snap 1 outa 2 feathers if I tied them by the tips. Will try a few tonight to see is there much difference. Every concept batch I tie up I can picture them serenely floating down the river - I then remember some past frustrations of using CDC on moving water, the ffing and blinding as they failed to negotiate minor eddies.
