Default Finishing a Wet May

Just to show how i do it, seems to keep things nice and neat round the eye.

Keep the thread tight to eye

Wind partridge hackle on and catch stalk piece with 2 turns only of thread

Then pull stalk back with fingers and thump and tie down with 4 turns of thread

Whip finish and give stalk a quick pull to remove

Varnish and you should have a nice finish at head with no mess

Well thats how i do it and hope this helps

Why when you tie the stalk in with 2turns do you then pull it back and tie 4turns infront of it? Would it not be easier to tie it down with 3 turns and then whip finish? meybe i haven't read it right

Cheers Geordie
I usually do this with most of my wets but didnt think to do it with the mayflies as the stalk was quite thick .
I can remember where I saw the origional and the was on a MacPhail video, but once again thanks for going to the bother.

No probs Kevin....i find when you strip the partridge hackle the stalk is tapered and thinner where you tie it off, i also find it is soft and when you put tight turns of thread on it it squashes it down.
