hi john ,

john im looking to tie a needle fly or 2 to use as a "sunken" lure at night for sea trout , I read your informative tying tutorial and was wondering what size of needle you use personally ? and are they the stainless steel needles ?

thanks mark

Default Needle Fly Sizes

My apologies, Mark, for not replying earlier. I moved house over the summer and haven't been on the forum for a while. For sea trout, I like needles (ordinary sewing needles, usually Sharps or Betweens) of between 1.25 and 2 inches in length. If you aim for a total length of fly of about 1.5 inches, including a size 14 or 12 fine wire treble, you won't go far wrong. For more detail, see the third part of the article at:

The Needle Fly - Part 3
