Default Tungsten tear drop nymphs

TTN!

I sat down at the fly tying desk the night before last and had a think of what I could use the tungsten tear drop thorax beads for, having had no luck previous! After a bit of playing around I came up with this... which took 7 out of my 8 fish on the river Taff this morning!

Thread: Trico 17/0
Hook: Partridge SLD 14
Bead: Tungsten tear drop
Tail: Coq De leon - light
Shellback: Med Mirage pearl
Body: Olive blob tail
Thorax:Olive/natural hears ear
Thorax/bead cover: Pheasant tail

Attach a bead to a hook suitably sized hook

Attach your thread at the eye of the hook **infront of the bead**.

Tie in a few strands of pheasant tail for the thorax cover, and push the bead over the thread (back to the eye) and lift up, then take the thread back behind the bead...

Press the bead back down onto the back of the hook, and pull over the Pheasant to give a nice cover over the bead.

Place a small amount of glue or varnish into the gap of the bead to give it that bit of security.

Run the thread back down to the bend of the hook and tie in a few strands of CDL for the tail, then back up to behind the bead.

Choose your colour of blob tail for the body.. I chose Olive...

Tie in a piece of medium pearl mirage and two strands of olive blob tail, run the thread down to the tail and back up creating a tapered effect to compliment the bead.

Pull the pearl over the back, making sure it stays neatly on top of the hook.

And run the blob tail over the pearl and up to the bead.

For the thorax, mix two colours of hears ear, natural and olive..

and attach them to the thread.

Tie in, and rough out if necessary

Hi Kieron,

excellent flies and a good innovative use of the Tungsten- I'd prefer them on a hook size smaller (but that's personal preference). Maybe the tungsten won't fit?- Good top fly on a Czech nymph rig or even middle dropper fished near the bottom I think. Jobs a blinder- I might have a go.

Regards Jonathan.

thats got a killer profile would love to see how it would look with the PT tied in reverse, and the stray barbs pulled back over as legs like a conventional PT nymph.

Hi Jonathan,

It works a treat on the french leader in fast/shallow water! I guess with this bead on a smaller hook it would be harder to tie on, because of its profile, the thread seems to slip off the tapered end... one of my reasons for the pheasant over the back, as it gives a bit of a 'platform' to tie on.

I've got some tear drops and I've been looking for inspiration and this pattern is it!

Where do you get blob tail from and what is it?
