Default Floating Snail

Was fishing at woodford and came across this type of snail ( Rams Horn )....the lake was full of them in july migrating all over it so i got home and came up with this idea...which did attract a lot of the resident fish, not good at the sbs as it involves a lot of back and forth from table to window , but hope you get the idea.

First got a piece of foam and cut it 2ml like this

Then tied it on sewing needle like this

Then need some super glue on here..dont go mad

Then do some tight turns and hold till set..a few seconds

When set twist round needle to release then remove to leave this

Had a bit of bother with first ones as shell broke off when casting so came up with this idea to make it stronger

Threaded some nylon through the shell..your choice

Then melted end with lighter, super glue 4 mil and pull in

Trim nylon and add to hook..size 12 grubber

Trim nylon and whip finish

Water test, and looked good

Then added color, black at foot piece green and brown on shell

Can make them more realistic looking but when i tried them to great success it dont matter.

I used felt tips on them with a fine coat of varnish but it wares off so some permanent markers needed i think, also did green foam ones as they do have moss on their shell...some victims to the snails

Like i said need permanent marker as you see from pics felt tips wash off.

If you see rams horn snails about the surface then these will help.

Tight lines,

Geordie.

Turned out not too bad

They did wriggle in water with foot out and it did look dark hence the dark piece on hook.

These look the business, i reckon they would be great at Grafham when the fish are hard on the snails.....

Have to admit, about half way down that SBS I was having a little chuckle to myself....but the finished product is impressive, once the colours have been added. Fair play to you, and top marks for a bit of lateral thinking!

Did the job...just wish i had have twigged sooner as only caught on at tail end of their migration....as i said did them on green foam too and worked just as-well as some did have moss on them.

That's a very cool fly!

I think I'll be having a bash at these.

Cheers

Extremely clever, and something I will be trying. As FLIMAN said, there was a period on Grafham where every fish I gutted were stuffed with snails and I reckon these might just have worked well.

Thanks for sharing
Cheers
Ben
