Default Irresistible

This is the Irresistible, not so much a pattern as a style. You can turn virtually any dry fly into an Irresistible by giving it a spun deer hair body. The pattern I have tied here is somewhere between an Adams Irresistible and a Wulff Irresistible. A good alternative May fly pattern and because of it’s floating properties it would make a good dry fly to hang a nymph NZ style.
The processes for the tail, wings and hackles are almost identical to the Humpy step by step, so please view them if you need a little more detail.

Instructions assume right-handed tyers

HOOK – Kamasan B170 #10
THREAD – Yellow Power Silk
TAIL - Moose Body
BODY – Coastal Deer
WING - Grey Calf Tail
HACKLES – Red Game and Grizzle Cock

STEP 1
Mount the hook attach the thread and wrap to the bend, catch in the tail fibres as you go. The tail should be the same length as the body.

STEP 2
Start making the spun body. After a couple of bunches of hair have been spun you should pack the hair. You can use your fingers, but I think a “brassie” is better. Don’t forget to grip the tail end, you need something to pack against and if you don’t you will push the dressing round the bend.

Continue spinning and packing until you have enough to cover half the hook shank. Then make a whipfinish and detach the thread.

STEP 3
Trim the spun deer hair to shape. I find it easier to take the fly out of the vice to do this. Be careful, don’t cut the tail off!

STEP 4
Reattach the thread. Then offer up a bunch of Calf tail for the wing. The wing should be the same length as the body.

STEP 5
Tie the wing in as shown. Make sure you leave plenty of room at the head for the hackle turns.

STEP 6
Lift the wings up by placing a few wraps in front then split with figure of eight wrap and finally take a few wraps up and back down each wing.

STEP 7
Mount the red game and grizzle hackles on top of the shank.

STEP 8
Wrap the hackles one at a time and tie off, trim the waste and whip finish.

Thanks Scotfly, I had one of those over the summer but lost it up a tree and was never quite sure how to tie them!

Great step by step Scotfly
Got this fly on vacation from an flyfisher, catched alot with it but ofcourse did lose it also.
The fly i got had a yellow tail, dont know if it has a different name then???.
But grayling and trout did love it and so did i,it floats realy high so perfect for those fast streams.
