Jim,

I would never have dreamt of using such a weapon at night on the Endrick, on either floating or sinking line.

I may stand to be corrected here, but wasn't Mr. Harwood once the full time pro fly dresser for Peter MacKenzis-Philps ? The first time I saw this pattern was in M.P's catalogue & he said it was his top fish catcher and that lots of salmon/sea-trout were being taken on it as well as trout & grayling. It was as I recall his favourite fly.

K.M. for the feather go to Steve Cooper a.k.a. Cookshill flytying. give him a call on 01782 388382 most evenings, he's a member of this forum & will help you out more that you would think possible. The wire/thread/ hooks should be easily had from most tackle dealer that do trout gear. By the way welcome to the forum.

I used the Endrick Spider a lot years ago and never touched a thing on it it was always on my leader when i fished the teviot and tweed, usually a size 12or 14 on the point

After reading this thread i will now tie some more up and try them again

Try a size 8 for the salmon.

A good wee fly for rivers, fished on the tail it has been my go to spider on the Gryffe & other rain fed rivers.Best as a Spring fly & again at back end. I dispense with the weighted body though & on occasion I use a Woodcock neck hackle & find that Tutta like that as well as the standard dressing. All in all a good we flee & one river anglers should have in their box.
Tight Lines
Meant to say, one thing I found useful & whilst I can not prove it adds to the fly attractivness is to use a whip finish of bright orange thread such as the UTC 70 at the head (got to find a way to get rid of it )
