My only problem with that is that the hackle looks like a dog's breakfast. I think that if you're having problems getting your Klinkhamers (or parachute flies) to stay afloat then you're doing something seriously wrong with the hackle.

Yes it's not a very even hackle is it? That might just be because the author has tied that one badly though rather than a failure of the method. I'll give it a go and see if the foam interferes with the hackle fibres as it seems to do or whether it is really an easier method.

Jury's out until I've tried a few...

Steve,
You are right. The hackle does look like a dog's breakfast, and I didn't tie that sample pattern for Trout & Salmon. That particular fly was tied by Peter Gathercole who takes lots of the photos for T&S.
I can assure you that my EZ Klinkhamer pattern is a joy to behold when well-tied. The idea behind the tying of the Klinkhamer while using the foam wasn't to help the pattern float as such, but to help beginner fly tyers to tie what is a deadly pattern without having to perfect the original technique. Those beginners are very happy to be now able to tie this great pattern, and they have caught lots of fish on the same pattern.

Hi Pedro,

Any chance you could put up an SBS of your version of this pattern. I'd love to see your tying of it and how your hackles look. I tried tying it as in the pics (Trout & Salmon) and found the same - that the hackles were very much bunched up with the foam forcing them down.

I prefer tying it the normal way where I can get a lot more hackle in, starting well up the post and working it down and whip finishing with white spiderweb thread, and with the hackle tied in a V shape.

Bert

Gotta say, the Klink aint the easiest fly to tie. It looks fine, but the hackle / spiderweb finish is bloody annoying.

Hi Peter, you showed me this method at the Loughs Agency fair last year, it looked great. Do you post on any other forums? I'd be interested in seeing more of your stuff.
Here's a video form the Irish Angler website

I think someone done a step by step of it on this website.

And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

I knocked a couple of these out after reading the article and found them easy to tie and they fished well. However, it also made me go back to the original and make sure I was tying those correctly, making a proper whipping around the post etc. and actually it's not too difficult to do and the results are worth the extra effort.

Cheers

Jon
