Cracking step by step Yaffle. I tie a twinkle thorax variant, which when you look at it with uv light really stands out. I have had some quality fish on this pattern in the last 2 years.

Good photos, step by step and tying of a Cruncher variant, very nice.

Tend to stick with the use of a Greenwell's hen hackle as per the original pattern myself, however do also use hen Badger to give a nice wee effect on another variant. Being a modern wet fly rather than a dry, I find hen works much better than cock, to give the desired movement and effect in the water.

Other materials that make good use on variants include substituting the peacock herl in the thorax for lite-brite dubbing, or using dyed PT in the body.

Very versatile fly the Cruncher and its varients. Along with the Diawl Bach, GRHE and their varients, rarely is it off my cast.

Nice to hear from someone over the mental age of '4 months' on this forum.
I too tie with lite brite and I also use mirage tinsel as well as a number of other variants.

I also agree about the use of Greenwells Hen although it is really down to personal choice in the end
As I said in my post, the twinkle thorax through UV light stands out better than anything else I have used.

Have you any other variants that may work better?

By the way love the two fly lines; used the wf7 on Stocks last week. It performed better than I did.

Try tying it will black pheasant tail and use black seals for for the head, Along with black hackle for tail and head hackle.

I'm not 100% sure Stewart qualifies
but the cruncher is certainly a key nymph for me also. I typically do a fluoro green head a la Dave Downie and sometimes a Litebrite thorax. If I can't catch on that or a DB, there aren't any there

Another variation that works well for me is to use squirrel dubbing for the thorax/hackle with the guard hairs picked out. Works a treat!

Dave's tying looks good but I have yet to take a fish with the light coloured hackle he uses. I have substituted Greenwells Hen and started to pick up odd fish on them. I must admit I struggle to catch on DB's any help here would be appreciated.
