Me again another wee step by step for you all.

My favourite viva and along with the cruncher I just did caught me plenty of fish at chew valley, lake of mentieth and Loch Leven

Hook: - Kamasan B270 Size 12
Thread: - Black UTC 70
Tail: - Glo-Brite 12 Floss
Body: - Black Thread
Rib: - Silver medium lurex
Wing: - Black Velvet Marabou (mine )
Side Flashes: - 2 strands per side of original Mosaic not the new stuff.
Cheeks: - Jungle Cock

Step: -

Insert your hook and run the thread down to just below the points of the hooks



Step 2: -

Take about 16 inches of Globrite number 12 Floss and fold it 4 times and tie in



Step 3: -

Run the thread up to the eye of the hook, covering the floss all the way up so that you have an even body of thread with no bumps



Step 4: -

Tie in your rib, I use the two side lurex so tie it in so the gold is facing you



Step 5: -

Add a small drop of varnish to the thread to help strengthen the lurex when it is tied down.

Step 6: -

Rib the body with three turns only and tie off, once you have done this also trim the floss tail to international size



Step 7: -

Next up get a good pinch of black marabou and tie in sloping backwards as seen in the picture.



Now go wash your hands if you are not using my marabou .

Step 8: -

Now you need to have the original mosaic sorry if you do not, you can try the new stuff but IMHO its not a patch on the original



Take one strand and tie it on the hook and then fold that strand backwards and tie in at a different angle so that it looks liek a v-shape as show. Repeat this process for the other side also.



Step 9: -

Next up you must add you jungle cock, I have selected a large feather that has three spilts in it as shown



Notice that there are 2 large outer parts and a small inner part. Carefully remove the outer parts so you are left with the following



Step 10: -

Tie in the JC with the flat edges at the botom as shown so you get that nice curved effect on the eyes. Whip finish and varnish.



All the best and please do not ask me to tie these far too expensive, mosaic jungle cock.

I have no Jungle Cock, how does it work using biots as a substitute?

Either biots or, and this would be my choice, glo-brite #6 fluoro floss.
Don't worry too much about not having Jungle Cock for it. Jungle Cock is an over hyped feather IMHO. Except in Salmon and Sea Trout of course, oh and trout flies like the Watson's Fancy etc.

I have been very busy recently churning out flies by the dozen for the new season, whilst keeping an eye on some of the patterns appearing on this forum.I have some interesting patterns and variations to try as soon as I can get out again.

Your response on jungle cock Scotfly has left me a little confused as you seemed to be a little tongue-in-cheek on this point??
Seriously, how essential do you see its use on certain trout flies?

Seriously... I don't think it is essential on any fly, it is a vastly hyped and overrated feather IMO. But! There are some flys that I would never fish without it, Watsons Fancy,Dunkeld,Grey/Green Monkey etc as well as numerous Salmon flys. Not because I think it is essential to these flys, more because of an irrational feeling that they "make" the fly. I'm sort of brainwashed by the hype I know is not true. Or to put it another way, I would not have confidence in some flys if they didn't have Jungle Cock eyes and as we all know you will catch more fish on a fly you have confidence in.

Not really one I've used. The obvious variations though are fluoro biots, different coloured ribs, fluoro collar and a flash back.

No I've not used it before either; I had it reccommended as one to try so I've been playing on the tying bench with some interesting results.
I know from back issues of Trout Fisherman that it is a pattern that does work on stillwaters as well as rivers; I'll let you know how I get on with it.
