Default Snake fly step by step.

Here is a step by step, on how i tie my snake flies.

Click the image to open in full size.
Some materials that you will need.
Click the image to open in full size.
Thread mono braid back in side it's self.
Click the image to open in full size.
Here both ends ends have been threaded, i am using a size 14 swivel head of fly and a size 6 treble.
Click the image to open in full size.
Here are the tools i use for threading mono braid.
Here the braid has been pulled tight, and a tiny drop of super glue to lock braid. here do not put a lot of glue as it will run up braid and make mount stiff. the mount for this fly should be nice and flexi.

Next thread shrink tube over mount, i use a boillie needle to do this,

Here you see tools i use for pulling shrink tube over braid mount.
Click the image to open in full size.
Here you see shrink tube on mount after steaming with kettle, and before steaming. the size i use is 2.2mm.
Click the image to open in full size.
Now place hook in vice, and add flash if need be.
Click the image to open in full size.
Now here i have opened mylar piping to give fly add flash, and whip in butt of fly.
Click the image to open in full size.
Here mount is finished, note i have a few turns behind eye of swivel to hold mylar.
Click the image to open in full size.
Now i have put three coats of sally hanson mega shine leave to dry.
Click the image to open in full size.
Here are a few i have done with single hooks, and also with loop at head of fly. some of my customers that i tie for like loop at head of fly so that they can add cone's for heavy water in rivers or deep pools.
Click the image to open in full size.
Here a tip for those who dont have lot of color mylar, use colored braid with pearl mylar and the color of braid core will show though pearl. plus it does give off a nice glow when wet. or white braid and color with high lighter pen.
Click the image to open in full size.
Now this is the bit a lot don't like, you have to tie wing on in you hand. it can be a pain when you start, but practice will get you there.

And here is the finished fly for this step by step. tie in with some Amherst neck feather and some jungle cock.Click the image to open in full size.
And this is the hair i like to use for my snake flies, Marble fox. which i tie up for sewin/sea trout, salmon and bass flies.

Hi, Sorry in being so long in answering you, i just cut mylar to about 1/2 inch longer than the mount and slide it in. but if you have problems with mylar opening spray the mylar with hairspray leave it dry and you will find it staying in place, hope this helps.

Dai.

Another great fly from DaiJones, thanks for sharing. I've been wondering you the insides of the snake flies worked, so now I know.

Cheers

The ones with singles have work well for me in my bass fishing, plus have tied a lot up for anglers in the states. and they have been very happy also.

And this is another one i tie, which works well with salmon and sea trout. which do take hold of the fly by the head. i have had lots of takes which don't hook up. and found by changing over to this setup put more fish on the bank.

A lot of pike specialists on the coarse side have moved over to singles (and a lot to barbless singles) primarily for fish welfare/ease of unhooking reasons. . Mick Brown has been using them on a lot of his rigs for a while now and has not noticed any significant increase in lost fish etc.

I find on some lures that the treble points tend to get in the way of each other, many a time has a pike spat a lure back at me with two sets of trebles on. but then again singles on pike lures are always much beefier, and tend to be hard to set. especially whe nthey have massive barbs!!! i crush all the barbs on single pike lures.
