Default Mallard Medicine

I guess I’m lucky that the Towy is only a couple of hours over the bridge. Therefore, every summer, I put in several nights in pursuit of the Sewin. My main line of attack, once the night is properly dark, tends to be Waddingtons and tubes with the surface-lure putting in the occasional appearance. However I really love fishing the fast, streamy water with smaller wets, just as the light starts to disappear.

I tend to fish a team of three, but in there somewhere will usually be the Mallard Medicine. Simple to tie and hugely effective. Falkus was on to something there…:

Hook: Fulling Mill 31510 #10
Thread: 8/0 Red
Body: Silver tinsel
Rib: Silver wire
Hackle: Blue Cock
Wing: Mallard

(in the order they are tied)

1) Catch in the tinsel body and the wire. Use the thread to create a flat under-body

2) Wind the tinsel forward, just over lapping each turn. Secure with the thread and start to rib with equal spaces

3) Secure the rib

4) Tie in the hackle

5) Wind the hackle. I like to tie some very sparsely and others with a thicker, sometimes palmered hackle.

6) Choose your Pair of Mallard Wings

7) Get them at the correct length and then bind down

8) Whip finish and add a drop of head cement

Easy and quick to tie and highly effective. Perhaps not one for the display cabinet, but it’ll take a few fish.

Thanks IP.

Nice picture HF. Always like the look of the teal wing.
