Greenwell's Variant
Another version of the classic pattern that has works really well for me on the Liffey and Barrow recently. Its similar to one sold by the Donegal Fly Company, tied by Andrew Ryan.
HOOK – TMC 206BL Sz 16.
THREAD – Pearsall's Primrose Silk Waxed.
WING - CDC Fibres.
TAIL – Clear Microfibbets.
RIB – Copper Wire.
BODY – Thread.
HACKLE – Brown.
STEP 1
Mount the hook, catch thread on and trim the waste.
STEP 2
Line up two or three CDC feathers, depending on the size of feather and hook, and clip off the tips.
STEP 3
Stroke the fibres forward and catch in above the quills with a few wraps of thread.
STEP 4
Trim the waste CDC.
STEP 5
Catch in two tail fibbets and bring thread down to the bend.
STEP 6
Catch in the rib and return the thread to the thorax.
STEP 7
Wind the rib to the thorax, tie down and break off the waste.
STEP 8
Catch in the hackle, wind the thread forward and build up in front of the wing. Then take a couple of figure eight wraps of thread through the wing to split it.
STEP 9
Wind the hackle forward with three turns either side of the wing, tie off at the eye and trim the waste.
STEP 10
Take a couple of loose figure of eight wraps of thread through the underside of the hackle to split it, stroke the hackle fibres up wards into place and the tighten the thread.
STEP 11
You don't want any fibres below the body, so with your hackle pliers pluck off any fibres that are hanging down, Whip finish and trim the wing to length.
