Default Aphid / Green Midge

Simple fly for those tricky moments.

Materials -

Hook - Kamasan B405 size 18
Thread - UTC Fluo. Chartreuse 140 Denier
Hackle - fine Grizzle cock

Step 1.

Mount your hook - if you can see it!

Step 2.

Take your thread to the start of the bend and return.......

Step 3.

.....almost to the eye and build a carrot shaped abdomen

Step 4.

Tie in your hackle

Step 5.

2 or 3 turns is enough to give the indication of wings and legs

Step 6.

Whip finish with only 3 turns of thread to keep the head small

Click the image to open in full size.

Step 7.

Dab the head with a permanent black marker and varnish carefully to complete the Aphid / Green Midge

Now go and cast it so that it drops off a leaf onto the water! (a la dwiltshire!)

I have caught a few on a similar pattern but with spent wings of antron instead of the hackle (never thought of the permanent marker trick though i like that one!!!). Will definitely tie up a few of these if i can find some hackle fine enough on my cape.

Could anyone suggest an alternative hook that might suit that size/weight ( or lack of it ) . Tks

This is my variation on it. It got a few hits hence it looking like it needs a bit of tidy up. This is tied on a #20

Never underestimate the aphid! Trout and grayling really switch onto them sometimes. Last autumn I had some memorable days...
I tie them with a flourecent yellow thread (if you hold a greenfly to the light it glows like a little yellow/green jewel). Sz 20 or 22, any light hook. It's nice tying these small simple and effective flies!
I've taken plenty of grayling and trout on them to around 1.5lb.

Dunk are you fishing them as floaters or is it the plop in and a slow sink that is the method?
