I've been tying a few march browns for the winged wetfly swap so thought it would be nice to do an SBS of this well known pattern. It's fairly straight forward and always looks the part after youv'e tied it as the blending of the hen pheasant with the partridge and hare is a real winner. I've tied this one on a kamasan B175 size 12.
Tie in fine gold wire down to tail tie in point.
Tie in some partridge hackle fibres for tail
Apply hare dubbing to the thread and wind up towards the eye of the hook.
Once body is dubbed up to near the eye wrap it with gold wire for the ribbing.
Then select a small partridge hackle and prepare it as in the pic below, this will be tied in near the end of the hackle to reduce bulk.
Tie in the hackle as in photo below, you can add a drop of fly-tite to secure the hackle more effectively if needed, then cut the waste end of the hackle off with scissors.
Wrap the hackle around the hook shank and then tie it off
Pull the hackle fibres down and make a few wraps aroumd them so that they are more or less below the level of the hook shank.
Take two matching feathers from matching hen pheasant wings and cut a wingslip from each of them. (the feathers below have already been used to make other wingslips so are near the end of their use).
Match up the wingslips so as they have roughly equal numbers of fibres and put them together ready to tie in.
Then tie in the wing with a winging loop (you can see how this is done in my 'Tying wings' SBS on here). Trim off waste, make a neat head and whip finish and varnish.
The finished fly.

Thanks for looking and hope you enjoyed this SBS.
cheers
