Murtol, i'd put away my tying gear for the season after tying too much in the close season, but that takes the biscuit. I might try in in a lighter hook as I am hoping to fish my Spiders as almost dries thiis season ( cos tying 3 flies on a leader scares the sh1t out of me ! ) . Remember, I chose the moniker "Spider" because i used them so much on Stillwater, not rivers

Very nice, I reckon that would work a treat on a team of 3 on the reservoirs when the small black midges are coming off. Nice SBS

I know this is an old thread, but I found it whilst trawling for B&P spider variants, such a nice simple (and undoubtedly effective) tying that I thought it deserved a bump for those like me, who have not been on this forum as long as others.

I'll be tying half a dozen to have a swim this evening.

Andrew

Andrew - I'm glad you did give this thread a bump. Like you, I had not seen this. It really is a stunning looking fly and one of those patterns that just needs to be tied.

Second this, I hadn't seen the thread 1st time around and would of missed this cracking fly, just tied up a few with black hen hackle but going to get some starling wings to do a few as well, a little off topic but im not massively experienced at tying, are there other flies that the rest of the starling wings could be used with?

Thanks, Jon

Lots of traditional spiders use starling feathers from the extreme base of the wing.
The primaries are also used, for example the Blae & Black wet or the Greenwell's Glory dry. The fibres marry together pretty well, so starling slips can be used for anything that requires a steel-grey wing

Just tied one. As above, the simplicity is wonderful. Thanks for the post.

Chris.
