Default The Dunkeld

The Dunkeld

this is a highly regarded Sea Trout fly named after the town of Dunkeld on the river Tay in Scotland were it originated..it also works well for Browns in summer evenings and is a great point fly,,the original does not have JC in the tying as far as i know but i feel it adds to its appearence and could also be
used as a fry pattern

hook: Kamazan 10#
thread: Black UNI 8.0
rib: Oval Gold (small)
tail: Golden Pheasant Crest
body: Flat Gold Tinsel
hackle: Orange Cock
wing: Bronze Mallard Shoulder
cheeks: Jungle Cock

Step 1
place the hook in the vice and make eight
turns of thread

Step 2
tie in the oval gold rib

Step 3
wind back towards the bend of the hook
ready to tie in the tail

Step 4
tie in the Golden Pheasant Crest winding forwards
to bind down all the fibers

Step 5
once the Crest has been tied off tie in the Flat
Gold Tinsel and wind back towards the bend of
the hook

Step 6
when you have reached the bend of the hook take
the thread forward to the point where the tinsel was
tied in then wind on the tinsel with over lapping turns
and tie off

Step 7
wind on the Rib,,5 turns should be enough and
tie off and trim the waste

Step 8
catch in an Orange cock hackle then trim the waste
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 9
make TWO touching turns of the hackle,,tie in and
push the fibers down with your thumb to form a
sort of Beard style effect

Step 10
prepare a slip of Bronze Mallard Shoulder and tie in
to form the wing,,after tying in the wing trim the waste
Click the image to open in full size.

Step 11
tie in TWO jungle cock feathers
(ONE each side of the hook) tie off and whip finish
The Finished Fly

Very nice. Is the version with a palmered orange hackle a variation?

From the hills above Glen-Car,
In pools among the rushes
That scarce could bathe a star,
We seek for slumbering trout
And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

Very nice indeed; but it seems there are lots of variations:

Corona's version is what I use for sea trout at low summer level in size 12 - it's very effective; however on size 10 and larger versions, I include a lightly palmered body hackle.

Very nice indeed H.... nicely proportioned.
Is there anything more satisfying in fly tying than applying a lovely bit of GP topping for a tail and getting that gorgeous, seductive curve right first time ?? Looks like ya got the hang of it mate...I've managed it once or twice...honest
I go for a longer gentler curve on most of my patterns for some strange reason
I've noticed some nice shades of dyed topping kicking around...anyone know a 'dealer' ?

Yes have tried them and can highly recommend. Your best bet is to contact Bill to find colours and current prices. I got the natural, red & green heads.
