Exclamation Ethafoam Bodied Mayfly (EBM)

You might like this one during the festivities with the Drake, when the trout may have seen a lot of artificials already...

EBM SBS here...

Nice fly but Oliver Edwards' Mohican May has the advantage of being very buoyant (but fiddlier to tie):

The LS hook and the non-detached body makes the EBM a very good hooker compared with smaller hooked, detached body style of flies.

Looks good richard However, I've dabbled a bit with that foam myself and when compressed like that I'm not sure its actually that bouyant. Have you tried a detached body version or are you not fans of that style from your comments? I made some spent spinner patterns using that thin foam cut out in flat wing shapes. They looked good but had a tendancy to spin a bit, but could be worth a bit more experimenting.

Ah! I should have explained. I use the material not to make the fly bouyant, the hackles and the extensive tail see to that, but to make a soft body. I had some quaint theory the fish might be slower in detecting the fact that it is a fake and so would give me more chance of hooking them. As it happens this bit of the original idea was not reflected in the facts, BUT... the fly turned out to be a winner anyway so I kept on making them. The body is too "white" when compared with the real thing but I think this adds to its effectiveness as it gets Darwined in preference to the many real ones on the surface at the same time.

I don't like detached bodies, preferring bigger hooks (when the rules permit) instead. I like polypropylene for winged flies like the Spent Gnats and use hairwings on other mayflies. More on his later...

Nice pattern and all but having used one identical i don't use it any more as the body sinks below the meniscus, i prefer to give the fish sanctuary.
Having said that come winter morally its acceptable to fish with nymphs.

I get the idea better now, the bigger hook also helps it fish below the surface right?
