Ah! I should have explained. I use the material not to make the fly bouyant, the hackles and the extensive tail see to that, but to make a soft body. I had some quaint theory the fish might be slower in detecting the fact that it is a fake and so would give me more chance of hooking them. As it happens this bit of the original idea was not reflected in the facts, BUT... the fly turned out to be a winner anyway so I kept on making them. The body is too "white" when compared with the real thing but I think this adds to its effectiveness as it gets Darwined in preference to the many real ones on the surface at the same time.
I don't like detached bodies, preferring bigger hooks (when the rules permit) instead. I like polypropylene for winged flies like the Spent Gnats and use hairwings on other mayflies. More on his later...
