No idea what to call this one as it is stretching it a little to call it a Stoat's Tail variant. At any rate it may already have a name. This one has caught me a few dollaghan when they are fresh in the river.


A common request is what flies to use for dollaghan. You could do worse than follow this style of pattern as it is one that is popular locally. A bog standard stoats tail with a blue hackle is also popular.

Presumably useful for sea trout too.


Assumes right handed tiers

Hook - Partridge salar size 9
Thread - Benecchi 10/0 Red
Rib - Fine Silver Wire
Body - Gold Holo Tinsel
Hackle - Blue cock
First wing - Blue arctic fox with 2 strands of silver krystal flash
Second wing - Black Squirrel tail with 2 golden pheasant topping feathers over it.

Mount the hook, run the thread down the shank and tie in the rib.



Run the thread back down towards the eye and tie in the silver holographic tinsel body.



Wind the tinsel down to where the wire is tied in then i always lightly varnish the body before running the tinsel back down to the eye. Another coat of varnish can be applied if desired. Wind the rib down to the eye and tie it off



Prepare a blue cock hackle. I like a fairly small hackle but i prefer it to be wound full rather than clipped or as a beard.I prefer doubling the hackle with it tied in at its tip.




Tie it in shiny side up



Then i double the hackle as is shown here

Wrap 2/3 turns of the hackle, sweeping it back as you go.



Next get some blue arctic fox



Take a thin strip of it and tie it in as a wing. Add 2 strands of silver krystal flash on either side.

NB. You can also tie in the arctic fox the opposite way and bring it back into position. This is meant to give it more mobility. Being naturally lazy i do not bother




Then take a thin strip of black squirrel tail. I prefer softish stuff like the Russian long haired variety. Tie it in as a wing.



Next take two golden topping feathers


Strip them to their bare minimum and tie them in on top of the squirrel wing. Tie them in and trip everything nice and neatly. Whip finish and you are done.

I would never had guessed to use blue in Dollaghan flies. Looks a wee bit like a silver doctor sea trout fly. If the water level manages to drop below the banks before the season ends, I might give one of these a throw.

Fished the BMC last Thurs and landed a cracking dollaghan of at least 3lb. Very silver fish, well proportioned and a great fight. Returned quickly to fight another day.

What is the story with dollaghan? Do they migrate form Lough Neagh?
