Thumbs up cravencast

I mentioned this one on another thread and it got some interest (sorry, no pics of it) OSTRICH HERL SHIPMAN'S BUZZER
Hook 12 - 16 down eyed light wire
Thread - tan
Breathers - siliconised Midge Wing fibres or similar
Body - Ostrich Herl, various colours
Rib - Gold or Silver very fine embroidery thread according to herl colour

Method. wind layer thread from eye to bend. Tie in length of Midge Wing along back to protrude either end as breathers. Take thread back to bend, attach rib with 2 turns, then attach Ostrich Herl by tip end, take thread to eye end. Wind herl to within 1 eye length of eye, bring rib through herl in counter-direction turns to eye, tie off and trim waste, Form small head and that's it. Gink well before use. I don't bother varnishing, use pre-waxed thread instead because they don't last that long. First used them in Yorkshire two years back on a stocked fishery and had about 30 fish per evening for 3 consecutive days, and results continue to be good. Needs to be fished absolutely static, and leader absolutely must sink or.........no success! Also worked as a pulling fly (size 12) high in the water on Tal-Y-Llyn last May, had several brown trout on a blue dun colour with silver rib.

Cheers for that one cravencast.
The Shipmans is one of my go straight to patterns for the summer, and i'll certainly give some of your varients a swim!
Nice to see the Ostrich herl being used, pretty neglected nowadays, possibly cos of its fragility. I tied some small, simple marabou tailed damsel types just a few days ago, and used ostrich for the bodies. The ostrich herl has a lovely translucent glow!
