This is the Ombudsman. It was designed by Brian Clarke in the early 1970’s. It wasn’t designed to imitate anything in particular, it was more a generic design to cover bottom living creatures such as Alder and Caddis larvae. I have found it to be a useful early season fly when Alder larvae are expected to be active, but it has been most successful for me in the hot sultry July days when you need to fish deep and slow. I normally have this on the point of a 25ft leaded with a single buzzer 6ft from the point, fished with an ultra slow figure of eight retrieve.
Instructions assume right-handed tyers.
HOOK – Kamasan B800 #10
THREAD – Brown Uni-Thread 6/0
BODY – 4-6 Peacock Herls
WING – Any Dark Mottled Feather
HACKLE – Brown Hen
HEAD – Thread.. Large.
STEP 1
Apply a spot of Super Glue on the hook shank and overwrap with lead wire.
STEP 2
Attach the thread and overwrap the lead wire.
STEP 3
Tie in the peacock Herls.Take the thread to the shoulder and apply a coat of varnish.
STEP 4
Twist the herls into a rope and wrap over the wet varnish to form the body.
STEP 5
Take a section of wing quill, here I have used Turkey and cut it away from the stem.
Now fold it in half to form the wing.
Tie in so that it lays flat, roof style, over the body and extending 6 – 12 mm beyond the body.
As always, when tying in wings, check the alignment.
STEP 6
Tie in the hackle.
STEP 7
Wrap the hackle and tie off. Then form a large head and varnish for the completed fly.
