Default How to remove a barbed hook painlessly

After managing to get a barbed hook stuck in my finger for the second time this close season while fly tying yesterday, i thought i'd post my flawless way to remove barbed hooks as a guide for any of you out there that are unlucky enough to get a hook in your finger (or anywhere else).

For the photos i put the hook in a towel as i didn't facy sticking a hook in myself.

things you will need:

Another person
a cold water tap
strong tying thread

Right you've got a hook in yourself, after cursing and swearing for a while collect some thread and a person, and go to your kitchen or bathroom or wherever you've got a tap.

Take the thread cut a large length of it, and stick one end of the thread round the bend of the hook like so.

Click the image to open in full size.

After you have done this put your finger under the cold water tap for 1 or 2 minutes until your finger is numb, then pinch your skin where the hook point is lifting the skin up while keeping your finger under the tap.

Click the image to open in full size.

then hand the thread to the other person line up the hook so it is going straight keep pinching the skin where the point of the hook is, and tell the other person to pull as straight and as hard as they can on the count of three.

Now put a tissue on it or if you want a plaster.

Well done, that's nearly correct.but you need to press down on the eye of the hook before you pull.
And forget thread you need some strong mono, min 10lb Bs

Always thought it best to push the hook all the way through before snipping off the barbed point, or the hook shank, with sidecutters.

I would not recommend it

No - the only time I did it I went to A&E, after the day finished.

Painless - spray/local anaesthetic - the tetanus jab hurt like hell though.

Thanks Don, that may prove useful at some point.
I was once told to tell the person you were extracting the hook from, that you would count to three, but actually pull on two, and surprise them.

I always flatten the barb before placing hook in vice. Preferably, buy barbles.
Out on one occasion with brither in law, he got fly stuck in his eye. Not wearing glasses and a windy day. I cut the leaer leaving 8 in left hanging down. The woosy refused to let me open his eye/lift up his lid. Trip hospital then on to second hospital after first had put some anaestic drops in. Saw othalmic surgeon who put more drops in his eye which caused his eye to open, magic. Black and peacock spider just fell out. NOT STUCK IN HIS EYE AT ALL. If he'd only just had lift his eye lid. WOOSY.

Had to take a mate to hospital when he stuck a bollie baiting needle in his thumb. The one with hook and latch on the end. Couldn't pull the thing due to the hook. 4 hours later, needle removed and one stitch in thumb. God i hate wasting fishing time unless talking fishing.
