Love the beetle - I use ice dub in the same way on the underside of the abdomen ( on rather less elegant imitations). I think foam patterns are all the better for having a bit of texture added.

I do have concerns about the finishing touches though - I appreciate that the varnish has been added to fortify the rather delicate raffia. However, have you considered the dire implications the weight imposed has for the proportion of the fly sitting above the meniscus
