Default Cul de Canon

Another one of Gwilym's. Usually tied with brown thread I've tied this one with black. When stacking the CDC stack 3 tips aligned and curves up, then another 3 tips aligned and curves the down so they go together like this ().

Hook: B100 or any curved hook
Thread: Brown
Under wing: 6-10 deer hairs tied on top of hook.
Wing: 6 CDC feathers
Tag: Red Tinsel

Insert hook in vice, start thread and wrap down to bend, tie in tinsel.

Make a couple of wraps with the top piece of tinsel and tie off.

Bring tag over and tie off.

Split thread and insert a small amount of Mole fur spin to make rope and wrap to just before eye.

Even tips of deer hair, measure to length and trim, tie in on top of hook.

Stack the 6 CDC feathers as instructions.

Measure off and trim, tie in as deer hair.

No Tango, that's the 'Iron Blue' F Fly version I gave you on the Liffey , c'mon, nice tying though. OK the Cul de Canon; Primrose tying thread rubbed through cobblers wax for abdomed and thorax area, some deer hair tips and CDC the same as the one you have tied. Mark 2 version has a fine thorax of olive mole fur or mouse fur right close to the wingbase with three turns of pearly on top of eachother in the middle of it, like an air bubble. legs and wings the same as the Mark 1. Hope that helps

Oh by the way remember to turn your back to the river when you tie it on!!! heh heh heh!

So this is the original Cul de Canon, I've only seen the iron blue version.

Interesting use of deer hair to act as the 'separator' between body and wing, preventing the CDC from collapsing onto the body. Neat solution

Cheers,

Hi Hans,

And has the added advantage of appearing like the legs of the hatching insect when the finished fly is viewed from underneath.

Another excellent tie Tango51

One entirely trivial question:

The hook you use - I take it that isn't a Kamasan B100?

Cheers,

.D.

It is indeed a B100. I use the B100 down to #16 then TMC 2488 for anything smaller. I went off the B100 for stillwater fishing as they had a habit of straightening on me, for the smaller fish in the river it's been OK.
