Default Detached Foam Body

Only use either Power Silk or another brand of GSP thread otherwise it won't slip off the needle.

Insert needle into vice.

Fold foam in half and cut from about 4-5mm on the thick end going down to 2mm in the middle, this will give you a dicky bow shape.

Cut a small V shaped notch in the middle.

Start thread about an inch up the needle, wind down to tip and back to lock.

Tie in Moose hair for the tails and park the thread about 1mm from the end of where you want the body to start.

Slide the foam with notch uppermost into postition, try to get the needle in the middle of the foam (where the notch comes in).

Take two turns around the foam to make the first segment.

Pull the tags back and take the thread to where you want the next segment, centre foam on needle again and make the two turns to form the segment.

Keep doing this until you have all but two of the segments you need (these go on the hook).

At the final segment whip finish and leave a large tag of thread.

Grab body tight (ish) and slide off the needle gently, place on desk and roll under a finger to make the body round. You now have this.

To tie in pull foam tags back and tie the tails and two tags of thread to the hook cut off waste, park the thread where you want the next segment.
Click the image to open in full size.

Oops forgot to finish it.

Just tie in the tags and finish the fly how you want.

Firstly, First class fly there! looks great, im still learning this art so i might have to wait a while before i tackle one of these!

On another note, does the low slung hook have an advantage / disadvantage?? it seems very prominent to me, does this not put the fish off? does it care?

Im just curious.
Cheers
Mike

Detached bodied flies are better on either wide gape short shank hooks or grub hooks, this one is on a B100 grub hook. The body of the fly is off the hook so you don't need the length in the shank.

Hi Tango,
Superb step-by-step as usual.
When I see these segmented foam bodies, I always seem to get a picture in my head, "If the Michelin Man went fly fishing that's the fly he'd use"
