Default Collar-hackled hairwing sedge

Collar-hackled hairwing sedge.

Not a particular pattern, but a popular, and pretty old style ( someone else can fill in the gaps on the provenance of the fly below if they like….....................).

Effectively, I tie it as a Grey Duster with an Elk hair downwing - it could just as easily be described as a really dull version of A.K Best’s St. Vrain Caddis etc………….

Dressing, for this version -

Hook : Fine to medium wire, down eye (Tiemco 900BL here). I use # 12-16
Thread: Danville’s Flymaster 6/0 Brown
Hackle: Well marked golden badger cock
Body : Rabbit body fur, including some guard hairs.
Wing : Elk hair, natural blonde

Method

1. Catch in thread behind eye

2. Catch in hackle ( I like it quite long in fibre), a few wraps down from eye. Dull side down, atop shank.Take thread to rear, taking hackle stalk with it (trim stalk just before you get to end)

3. Throw on some rabbit fur

4. Stop around here

5. Prepare Elk hair first - brush out underfur, then stack. Offer it to hook - I like quite a long wing, and trim to length before mounting.

6. Mount hair. A little flare is fine.

7. Trim the little stubs, then cover with thread.

8. Conceal your indiscretions with a little rabbit fur, working from eye back to wing.

9. Wrap hackle in more-or-less touching turns

10. Trap hackle with thread, then wind through to eye.

11. Whip finish and that’s it. Job done.

hope this is some use,

Cheers,

Billy,

'D' will no doubt chime in on the subject, but

Eh... scissors?

As 'D' showed trimming the butts prior tie-down and this is my approach also. Much cleaner than trimming after tie-down.

Default No doubt ;)

Hi folks,

Like Hans, I clip before tying in (nothing to be gained otherwise, as I see it).

Usually .

A tidier mess on the floor too.

Thanks,

.D.

Thanks for that.

I never even considered trimming the butts before tying them in, though it is obvious now

I have struggled with scissors, razor blades, (never a good idea after the second glass of red), and even a heated wire contraption that burnt me and left the hairs barely singed.

Never assume anything is obvious, TELL ALL!

Regards
Billy

This is a very pretty pattern D - I really like it. Have you ever tried it with a brown or natural CDC body?

Thanks very much, Mike!

No, I haven't tried CDC - I like the way it sits down when the rabbit fur gets wet. And I like rabbit fur

Worth a dabble though

Cheers,

.D.
