Default Veniard Capes - What size flies

Just looking for some advice before purchasing.

Veniard Capes - what size flies should I be able to tie with one of these. Am hoping to go as low as 22/26 for tiny black gnats but am not sure if I would need to go for a Whiting to get such small barbs.

Thanks

Hi
You need to be specific about exactly what type of cape from Veniards as they sell differn't types under their own branding. But I would suggest that you buy Keough instead as they cost a few quid less than the Veniard branded capes and are far more suited to what you are looking to tie. They can also be bought from Veniards ( roughly £5.00 less to buy a Silver grade, the same or a little more for a higher grade). I just bought in a selection from both brands and won't be spending my money on the Veniards branded ones again!

go with whiting or a metz mate.. much better. more smaller feathers than most.. nice thin stems where as the keough even the master grade have really thick stems meaning less turns, the smaller feathers arent too bad but the stem on size 16 upwards are thick

I have one and to be honest i would save a bit more and buy a better cape. Not the best of capes for the price. Have a look here Chevron Hackles have been getting some good reports.

I dont buy genetic capes i use saddles instead I find them easy to use and you get lots of flies out of one feather, I prefer the whiting silver grades, You tend to find that the bottom of the feather is useful for bigger flies and the tip can be used for very small flies indeed, Hope this helps.
