Default Booby fly: Foam diameter and fly size?

Is there any "rule of thumb" for what size (diameter) foam works best for certain sizes and/or style of hooks?

Thanks.

Cheers,

Bryan

Assuming your using the mass produced foam cylinders that come in small or large sizes, for the ones I have small is around 3.5mm and large at 6mm in width, I use the larger sizes on size 8 and 10 short Hayabusa shank hooks and the smaller sizes on size 10 and 12 Competition heavyweight normal shank hooks

This avoids the eyes obstructing the gape.

All that said, on the competition circuit most anglers are now tying boobies with very small eyes, ie the small foam cut in half on size 14 hooks.

As for the width of the eyes, I always use a piece of foam the length of the hook shank (on the short shanks)

Cheers

The best advice on this was to get the old type extending car arial from a scrappy and take it apart then sharpen the ends with some sand paper giving you various sizes.

Bryan,

Everyone has differnet preferences for their own flies, obviously, you don't want them too big, or too small.....

#8's - I tend to use 8mm, Minky Boobies etc......

#10's - 5mm

#12's - 4mm

#14's - 3.5mm

As Chris also mentioned, comp boobies now are tending to evolve down the 'small eye' route, with #10's coming with 3.5mm eyes, and some are even using rubber gasket for eyes as this comes in some very fine diameters.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

So, why are the comp guys migrating to the smaller sizes? For hooking reasons? Other?

Cheers,

Bryan
