Question Hens?

The family are putting pressure on to get a few hens. I am not particularly keen, but if I could get the odd decent cape as well as the eggs I might be persuaded.
Any suggestions as to breeds that might be worth having for future tying?

Billy

Rhoad Island Reds have nice colour, not sure about quality.

Hackles by H.F.Elder is long out of print, but worth looking out for for the home breeder/chicken keeper.

Dont do it, unless you have plenty of space.

I like highbrids for laying, warrens etc. But if you can get a Black Leghorn cock to go with them, then you'll have some good hackle feathers on tap.

I also keep a few ducks, plenty of eggs & cdc's

i got some bantom cockrels from a mate off mine a while back the were still warm if you get my drifft but the wee capes i got of them was well worth the effort to process i still use them yet.and they were quite tasty as well he had to thin the cocks out as they were always fighting

We have three Columbian Blacktails. Look like ordinary brown hens with, yep you guessed black tails. The capes look really nice. Three eggs a day for the last two years and still laying the same. Brilliant birds. They eat everything from Tandoori to frogs!
