Default good sub surface sedge pattern ??

My last couple of visits to the itchen have been frustrating... the fish have been swirling sub surface, massive quantities of sedges zig-zaging over the water but i have struggled to make contact... tried elk and cdc, grhe, spiders, nowt doing..

i have been looking for a sub surface (just) caddis pattern to try any suggestions ??

How about a version of steve thorntons soft bodied pupa - I think the tying sequence is free on the VN website. You can easily simplify it to make it a quicker tie, but keep the main part which is the nymph skin body that gives it it buoyancy to sit subsurface.

What about the Roman moser bubble sedge? good pattern and depending on hook and materails u should get it sitting where you want normally it sits on the surface but puling the fly about a foot or so makes it duck under then back up,hope this helps

The good old Invicta might do the trick, fished sub-surface. It may be old but it still catches.

For sub surface emerging sedges an Invicta takes some beating, however I find any of the CDC and elk style flies, greased and fished on a midge tip or long leader of heavy fluro carbon can be pulled under and fished just a couple of inches down with a fast figure of 8 retrieve.

Another great fly is one of Brian Leadbeater's (remember him?) A simple firey brown seals fur body, palmered with a ginger hackle in sizes 12 and 14 with a white floss tag or short tail. An easy fly to tie and very effective,

Regards

might be an idea to try the washing line effect even on a river/small stream, i found this a few times in the past and anything remotely on the surface never got a look in,although, you could tie some pupapatterns suspend them under a stocking wrapped foam ball tied to some nylon/flourocarbon tied into the fly pattern, you can then do 3or4 in different lengths ie. 1inch, 1.5inch,2inch,

i think the invictaa might be pushing it... chalkstream rules and all that.. i do fish spiders but i use them like dries.. hackle them a bit heavier and give am a wipe of loon...

I dont think you can whack a yellow spider with partridge hackle and a good build up of HE as a thorax. If your getting fancy some brown ice dub mixed with the HE makes it all the more effective.
